VASER uses ultrasound energy as part of the fragmentation and emulsification of adipose tissue, followed by suction with cannulas. It is used in body-contouring procedures and should not be understood as a treatment for obesity or as a weight-loss method. The manufacturer’s information states that VASERlipo does not produce significant weight loss.[1]
The technology may be considered for selected areas according to anatomy, skin quality, fat distribution, overall health, and the person’s goals. The availability of a device does not replace surgical planning, the surgeon’s training, or safety measures.
Body contouring is not weight loss
Liposuction is intended to modify the contour of specific areas by removing localized fat. During surgery, the planned area may receive an infiltrated solution, followed by controlled ultrasound energy and aspiration of adipose tissue. As with any surgical procedure, liposuction may involve pain, swelling, bruising, temporary or persistent sensory changes, contour irregularities, asymmetry, scars, infection, bleeding, thrombosis, embolism, thermal injury, and revision surgery. The manufacturer’s safety information also lists scar tissue, blood clots, and thermal burns among possible adverse events.[1]
Recovery varies with the volume treated, number of areas, health status, and associated procedures. Follow-up may include dressings, compression garments when indicated, symptom monitoring, temporary limits on strenuous activity, and scheduled visits. Early appearance should not be judged in isolation because swelling may alter the contour during the first days and weeks.
Possible association with fat grafting
In selected situations, autologous fat obtained during aspiration may be assessed for fat grafting to another area. This is not automatic: it depends on available tissue, anatomical indication, processing, recipient site, risks, and the individual decision. Fat grafting may involve partial resorption, contour irregularities, asymmetry, infection, nodules, calcifications, and other complications; it therefore requires planning, an appropriate setting, and follow-up.
Combining procedures may increase complexity, operative time, and safety requirements. The indication should be discussed separately, without promising permanence or a specific outcome.
